Welcome to Somerset Contemporary Artists' Network
What is Contemporary Art ?
The late Robert Hughes highly respected art critic explains it well, in this piece from Time Magazine:
‘Contemporary art is defined as art that is current, offering a new perspective and point of view and often employing new techniques and new media.
The currency of contemporary art challenges what was before and hints that there is more to come.
It should confront prevailing notions. It might also be seen as interesting, exciting, significant and fresh.’
We are an artist-led support and networking group which supports emerging artists and has links with Somerset Art Works.
Somerset Contemporary Artists’ Network was formed in 2009 as Somerset Emerging Artists’ Network. When many of its original members had become established in their practice, it was decided to change the name.
The group now offers a unique opportunity for emerging artists to enjoy the support of more established members through all stages of development.
The group has established close links with Taunton Deane Council, Kings College, Somerset Art Works, Ilminster Arts Centre and Somerset College. Indeed many members are recent graduates in Fine Art who studied at Somerset College.
Further information on the group is contained in the Constitution (click to download).
SCAN meetings will be held Quarterly in the future at a local hostelry in Taunton with one of these to be held in the Ilminster/Langport area annually - details to be confirmed.
In addition, members can meet up at the monthly Creatives Club meeting at CICCIC Taunton and Great Bow Wharf Langport
